Ideal F9 fault code explained — Incredaboil guide

The Ideal F9 fault code points to a boiler control-board fault or configuration problem. On the Logic Combi ESP1, Ideal describes F9/L9 as an unconfigured PCB. Some related Ideal servicing guides group F9, L9, F8 and L8 as a PCB that is unconfigured or faulty, while Instinct2 technical literature directs the engineer to replace the PCB for F9/L9.

Because the exact wording varies by model, identify the boiler before assuming which description applies. In every case, this is an internal engineer-level fault, not a homeowner repair.

What does Ideal F9 mean?

PCB stands for printed circuit board. It is the boiler’s main electronic control board, coordinating safety checks, sensors and operating sequences.

F9 means the controls cannot operate normally because the board’s configuration or operation is not accepted. The code does not prove that a new board is always required: the correct engineer procedure depends on the exact model, its configuration data and the tests carried out.

Which Ideal boilers use F9 or L9?

The code is verified in Ideal manufacturer literature for:

  • Ideal Logic Combi ESP1 — F9/L9 described as unconfigured PCB;
  • Ideal Logic Code Combi ESP1 — F9/L9, F8/L8 grouped as PCB unconfigured or faulty;
  • Ideal Exclusive2 — F9/L9 listed within its PCB configuration/fault group;
  • Ideal Instinct2 — F9/L9 directs the engineer to the PCB repair route.

Other Ideal boilers may use different codes or definitions. Check the exact user guide and identification label without removing the casing.

What symptoms might appear?

The boiler may lock out, show no heating or hot water, restart unexpectedly, or display F9 or L9 continuously. The code can sometimes appear after work involving the control board, but it can also arise without any recent service.

Do not infer that a previous engineer fitted the wrong part, and do not buy a PCB from the code alone. Control boards may require model-specific configuration and safety checks.

Can I reset an Ideal F9 fault?

Follow only the user reset or restart instruction in the manual for your exact model. A single permitted restart is reasonable if there are no signs of gas, fumes, scorching, water near electrics or another immediate hazard.

If F9 returns, stop resetting the boiler. Ideal’s Logic Combi ESP1 user guide tells the homeowner to contact Ideal while under warranty or a Gas Safe registered engineer outside warranty.

Safe information to collect

  • Photograph the closed boiler and full display.
  • Record whether it says F9, L9, F8 or L8.
  • Find the exact model and serial number from accessible documentation or labels.
  • Note whether recent repair, power interruption or electrical work preceded the code.
  • Record whether heating, hot water or both are unavailable.
  • Check the boiler’s warranty status.

Do not remove the casing, touch the PCB, reseat plugs, change configuration links or install a second-hand board. The boiler must be commissioned and checked correctly after control work.

Is F9 caused by low pressure?

No. Ideal uses F1 for low water pressure on the verified Logic-style controls. Adding water will not correct an F9 control-board fault unless a separate pressure issue also exists.

Is F9 the same as low voltage?

No. F7 is the published low-mains-voltage code on these controls. An unstable electrical supply may be relevant history for the engineer, but F9 has its own PCB-related meaning and should not be re-labelled without testing.

What will the engineer do?

The engineer will confirm the model, consult the correct Ideal technical information and assess the control board, its configuration and relevant electrical supply or connections. Any replacement or programming must match the appliance and be followed by the required safety checks.

The servicing manual may instruct reconfiguration or replacement, but those directions are intended for competent engineers. Publishing internal steps for homeowners would be unsafe.

Is F9 dangerous?

F9 is a safety-related lockout rather than proof of a gas leak. Leave the boiler closed and do not bypass the controls.

If you smell gas, see scorching, have water reaching electrical parts, or a carbon-monoxide alarm sounds, leave the property and use the appropriate emergency route. For suspected gas leaks call 0800 111 999.

The short answer

Ideal F9/L9 is a PCB configuration or control-board fault, with the precise wording depending on the model. One model-approved restart is the limit of sensible homeowner action. If the code returns, record the details and arrange Ideal support or a Gas Safe registered engineer.
