Baxi 800 Combi 2 E.02.17 fault code: permanent communication failure between gas valve and boiler control — Incredaboil guide

Baxi 800 Combi 2 E.02.17 fault code: permanent communication failure between gas valve and boiler control

If a Baxi 800 Combi 2 shows E.02.17, Baxi’s current error-code table defines it as “Permanent communication failure between gas valve and boiler PCB”. The boiler has been unable to exchange the expected control information between its main electronic control and the gas-valve system.

“Permanent” is the manufacturer’s fault-state description. It means the interruption has reached a state the boiler is treating as persistent, rather than proving that one named component is permanently damaged. A Gas Safe registered engineer must test the control path and confirm the cause.

What does E.02.17 mean?

A modern combi boiler follows a controlled sequence whenever it is asked to heat radiators or provide hot water. Its PCB coordinates that sequence, while the gas valve controls gas flow to the burner. Reliable communication is essential so the boiler can operate and stop safely.

E.02.17 means the expected communication has failed and the boiler has registered the failure as permanent. The appliance may lock out or refuse a demand. The code does not tell a homeowner whether the gas valve, PCB, connector, wiring path, electrical supply or another control issue is responsible.

How is E.02.17 different from H.01.00?

Baxi lists H.01.00 as a temporary communication failure and E.02.17 as a permanent communication failure. The distinction describes how the boiler has classified the condition. It is not a judgement about repair cost, and it does not mean a temporary warning is harmless or a permanent fault always requires both named parts.

If your boiler actually shows the temporary warning, use our guide to the Baxi H.01.00 warning. Record the exact code rather than relying on memory, because the advice and engineer’s fault history depend on it.

What might you notice?

The boiler may not provide heating, hot water or either service. It may attempt to start and then stop, or remain in a locked state with E.02.17 displayed. Because the Baxi 800 Combi 2 produces hot water directly rather than storing it in a cylinder, a lockout can affect taps as soon as there is a demand.

Do not use sounds, brief starts or display changes to decide which internal component has failed. Note what happens and leave internal testing to an engineer.

Safe checks before booking a repair

Photograph the full display and write down whether heating, hot water or both are unavailable. Look at the ordinary room control for a separate message. Note any recent power cut, electrical work, service visit or other code that appeared first. These observations can help without exposing you to gas or electrical components.

  • Confirm that E.02.17 is the exact code shown.
  • Note whether the fault appears on every demand.
  • Record whether the boiler is completely silent or briefly attempts to operate.
  • Check only the normal external controls described in the user guide.
  • Keep the casing closed and do not disturb the boiler’s power connection.

If the correct Baxi user guide permits a homeowner reset, you can try one reset using the front controls. If E.02.17 remains or returns, stop. Repeated resets will not repair a persistent communication failure and can delay a proper assessment.

What not to do

Do not remove the boiler casing, inspect or adjust the gas valve, disconnect plugs, disturb wiring or test voltage, resistance or continuity. Do not bridge terminals or enter installer settings. The checks involve gas and mains-powered controls and require suitable competence, instruments and manufacturer information.

Never try to force the boiler to light or bypass the lockout. Do not buy a PCB or gas valve solely from the displayed code. Parts must be correctly identified, tested and fitted, and the appliance must then be checked for safe operation.

Does E.02.17 mean a new boiler is needed?

No. The code identifies a specific communication failure, not the overall condition of the boiler. Repair may involve a connection, control component or another confirmed issue. Age, condition, parts availability and the engineer’s findings will influence whether repair or replacement offers better value, but the code alone cannot make that decision.

Equally, the word “permanent” does not mean the boiler can never work again. It describes the current fault classification and tells the engineer that the boiler has not treated the communication problem as a brief interruption.

When should you call an engineer?

Arrange a repair when E.02.17 appears. If one reset specifically allowed by the user guide does not clear it, the boiler needs professional assessment. Do not continue repeated start attempts, especially if heating and hot water are unavailable.

E.02.17 is not itself a message that gas is leaking. Treat a gas smell, suspected fumes or a carbon-monoxide alarm separately and urgently: leave the property, avoid flames and electrical switches, and follow current Gas Safe emergency advice. Do not wait for the fault-code visit.

What will the engineer check?

The engineer will confirm the exact model and review the appliance’s recorded fault information. Using Baxi’s service instructions and appropriate instruments, they can assess the approved communication path, connections, supply conditions and operation of the relevant controls. They will identify the confirmed cause before changing parts.

After repair, the appliance should be tested through normal heating and hot-water demands and checked for safe operation. You do not need to open or prepare any part of the boiler beforehand.

How to prepare for the visit

Keep photographs of E.02.17 and any earlier code. Note the time, what service was requested and whether the fault followed a power interruption or recent work. Have the boiler’s service history available if possible and make sure the engineer can reach the appliance safely.

If the home has no heating, use temporary electric heating only according to the appliance instructions, keep it clear of fabrics and never leave it unattended. Do not use ovens or outdoor heaters to warm the home.

Quick answers

Can E.02.17 be reset?

You can try one reset only if the correct Baxi user guide permits it. If the code remains or returns, book a repair.

Does “permanent” mean the damage cannot be repaired?

No. It describes the boiler’s fault state, not the repairability of the appliance.

Does the code prove the PCB has failed?

No. The PCB is one end of the named communication path, but testing is needed before any component is replaced.

Can I test the gas valve myself?

No. Keep the casing closed and leave all gas-valve, electrical and combustion checks to a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Need the boiler repaired?

Your boiler fault is fixed for the agreed price, subject to eligibility and terms.
