Baxi 800 System 2 E.04.02 fault code: flow temperature sensor disconnected

If your Baxi 800 System 2 shows E.04.02, Baxi’s official description is “Flow temperature sensor disconnected”. The boiler is not receiving the expected signal from the sensor circuit that monitors the temperature of heating water leaving the appliance.

Quick answer

E.04.02 means the boiler has detected a disconnected flow-temperature sensor signal. It does not prove the sensor itself is the failed part or that someone has physically unplugged it. Do not open the casing or test wiring. If the code remains or returns after the permitted user reset, arrange a qualified repair.

What is the flow temperature sensor?

In a heating system, “flow” means water travelling away from the boiler towards the radiators or the hot-water-cylinder circuit. The flow temperature sensor gives the boiler information about how hot that water is.

The control system uses this information to regulate heat output and to check that temperatures stay within the expected range. Without a reliable signal, the boiler cannot confidently manage normal operation, so it may stop and display E.04.02.

The sensor is inside the appliance’s controlled system. It is not the room thermostat, cylinder thermostat or an outdoor temperature sensor. Changing a room-control setting will not reconnect the signal described by this code.

What does “disconnected” mean?

“Disconnected” is the condition the boiler has detected in the flow-temperature signal path. It does not necessarily mean a plug is visibly hanging loose. The underlying issue could involve the sensor, its connection, wiring, the control board or another condition affecting the signal.

The display does not separate those possibilities. That is why E.04.02 should not be turned into a definite diagnosis or a reason to order a sensor before testing.

What might you notice at home?

The heating may fail to start, or the boiler may stop soon after a demand. Radiators can remain cold. Because the Baxi 800 System 2 also heats a separate hot-water cylinder, cylinder reheating may stop as well. Stored warm water can remain available for a time, but it will not be replenished normally while the boiler is locked out.

The display should show E.04.02. You may notice the fault after the system has been off, after a power interruption or during a normal call for heat. Timing is useful information for an engineer, but it does not prove the cause.

Safe observations to record

You can help the repair without touching the boiler:

  • record the exact code, including punctuation: E.04.02;
  • note whether it appeared during heating, cylinder reheating or both;
  • write down any other code shown immediately before it;
  • note whether the boiler starts briefly or remains silent;
  • record any recent authorised boiler work or power interruption;
  • note the normal external pressure-gauge position without changing it.

Keep the casing closed. There is no useful visual check for the sensor from outside the appliance, and the external boiler temperature setting is not a sensor test.

What not to do

Do not remove the front case, pull connectors, inspect wiring or try to reach the sensor. Do not use a meter to test resistance, continuity or voltage. The boiler contains mains electricity, gas controls and hot components, and those checks require the correct service procedure.

Do not bridge the sensor connection or fit a resistor in an attempt to clear the code. That would give the control system false temperature information and defeat a safety-related monitoring function.

Avoid repeated resets or power cycling. If the Baxi user guide permits one reset and E.04.02 comes back, stop there. Repeated attempts do not repair a missing signal and may make the timing of the fault harder to interpret.

Does E.04.02 mean the boiler is overheating?

No. This code says the flow temperature sensor is detected as disconnected. It is different from a code that reports a maximum temperature being exceeded. Because the reliable temperature signal is missing, the boiler may stop before it can continue normal control.

The casing or pipes may feel warm from recent operation, but touch is not a safe or accurate way to assess an internal temperature fault. Keep clear of hot surfaces and leave measurement to the engineer.

Can a reset fix it?

A reset may restart the control sequence if the interruption was momentary, but it cannot repair a persistent sensor-circuit problem. Follow only the user-level reset described in the model guide. If the fault returns, professional attention is needed.

Do not continue resetting simply because the boiler runs briefly. An intermittent signal still needs investigation, especially if heating or cylinder reheating is unreliable.

When should you book a repair?

Book a repair when E.04.02 remains on the display or returns after the permitted reset. The boiler needs dependable flow-temperature information to operate correctly. If cold weather, health needs or vulnerable occupants make the loss of heating urgent, explain that when arranging the visit.

Need the boiler repaired?

What will an engineer assess?

A qualified engineer will confirm the exact model and code, review stored fault information and assess the flow-temperature signal using Baxi’s technical procedure. The checks may cover the sensor circuit, its connections and how the boiler control responds.

The result determines whether the sensor, another part of the signal path or the control system needs attention. E.04.02 narrows the area of investigation but does not name the failed part.

Gas and carbon-monoxide safety

E.04.02 is a temperature-sensor signal fault, not a gas-leak or carbon-monoxide alarm. Separate warning signs still require emergency action. If you smell gas, do not use electrical switches or flames; ventilate if safe, leave and contact the National Gas Emergency Service. If a carbon-monoxide alarm sounds or anyone develops headache, dizziness, nausea or confusion, move into fresh air and seek urgent advice. Boiler case removal and gas-appliance work must be left to a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Quick answers

Is the room thermostat disconnected?

Not according to this code. E.04.02 refers to the boiler’s flow-temperature sensor signal, not the room thermostat.

Does the sensor definitely need replacing?

No. The sensor is one possibility, but the code alone does not identify which part of the signal path is responsible.

Can the boiler still heat the cylinder?

It may stop both central heating and cylinder reheating because reliable flow-temperature information is required during boiler operation.

Can I check the connector myself?

No. The relevant connection is inside the appliance and must be assessed by a qualified engineer.

Summary

Baxi E.04.02 means the 800 System 2 has detected a disconnected flow-temperature sensor signal. Keep the boiler closed, record when the fault occurs, avoid repeated resets and arrange professional repair if the code remains or returns.
