Baxi boiler starts then stops after a few seconds — Incredaboil guide

Baxi boiler starts then stops after a few seconds

A Baxi boiler that fires briefly and stops may have completed a very small demand, or it may be losing the flame, overheating, failing to circulate water or moving towards lockout. The exact sequence on the display matters more than the number of seconds.

Watch one natural heating or hot-water demand, photograph every code and keep the casing closed. Do not keep resetting the boiler to make the fault repeat.

Did the demand end normally?

A boiler should stop when the room thermostat is satisfied, the hot tap closes or the selected temperature is reached. Near the room target, a modern control may request short bursts rather than continuous firing. Hot-water preheat or frost protection can also produce brief operation.

Confirm that a real demand remains when the flame goes out. For heating, note the room temperature, target and schedule. For a combi, keep one hot tap at a normal steady flow only long enough to observe the display.

Record the order, not just the duration

Write down when the pump or fan is heard, when the flame symbol appears, when it disappears and whether the boiler retries. Record whether the display returns to standby, shows a normal temperature message or ends in a fault.

A stable flame that stops because demand ended is different from ignition followed by immediate flame loss. One short video can preserve the sequence without repeated testing.

Identify the exact model and code

Baxi codes vary across ranges. Its current error-code library separates flame loss, circulation, pressure, fan and sensor conditions. Never apply a code from another Baxi model.

Photograph every letter, number, punctuation mark and symbol before resetting. Find the full model on an external label or household paperwork.

Check pressure while the system is cool

Read the gauge and compare it with the matching user guide. Baxi’s general guidance describes 1 to 2 bar as a normal operating range, but the model instructions take priority.

Do not add water when pressure is already normal. Low pressure, a rapid rise or a reading that changes after every brief run is useful evidence for the engineer.

Does it affect heating, hot water or both?

If a combi stops during heating but supplies continuous hot water, controls or heating circulation become relevant. If it stops in both modes, the shared ignition, combustion, sensing or primary-water functions need professional assessment.

If only one hot outlet causes the symptom, compare another outlet during ordinary use. A restricted tap flow may fail to maintain demand, but do not dismantle the fitting as a boiler test.

Cold weather and condensate

Baxi says a frozen external condensate pipe can cause gurgling, shutdown and fault codes such as E133 or E28 on relevant models. Look only at an accessible external plastic pipe for ice or pooling water.

Follow Baxi’s homeowner thawing guidance only when the pipe is at ground level and safely reachable: gentle warmth or hot but not boiling water. Never use a flame, climb or open the internal trap.

One reset only when the guide instructs it

Baxi’s reset guidance says frequent lockout indicates a fault and the installer or service engineer should be contacted. If the exact manual permits a reset and there are no safety warnings, perform it once and allow the sequence to finish.

Stop if the boiler again fires for seconds and locks out. Repeated resets can erase the useful sequence and do not correct the cause.

Short cycling is not the same as flame loss

Short cycling means repeated brief runs because heat demand is small, controls are poorly matched or water is not carrying heat away effectively. The boiler may reach its target and restart later without showing an ignition fault.

Flame loss is a safety event detected after ignition. Baxi lists temporary and repeated flame-loss codes on applicable ranges. Only model-specific fault history and measurements can distinguish them.

Look for circulation clues

Note whether the displayed temperature climbs very quickly while radiators remain cool, whether pipes knock, or whether some radiators never warm. Baxi’s code library includes no-circulation and excessive-temperature conditions on relevant models.

Do not open a pump, bleed the boiler or add chemicals. An engineer may need to assess valves, pump operation, air, debris and system balance.

Gas-supply checks stay external

If the model guide suggests it, note whether another gas appliance operates normally. This cannot prove correct pressure at the boiler and should not be attempted if gas is suspected to be unsafe.

If you smell gas, avoid flames and electrical switches, open doors and windows, leave if necessary and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.

Possible professional diagnostic areas

A Gas Safe registered engineer may review fault history, gas pressure under demand, ignition and flame detection, fan and flue operation, condensate drainage, circulation, temperature sensors and boiler controls.

The symptom does not prove an electrode, gas valve, pump, fan, sensor, heat exchanger or circuit board has failed. Do not order internal parts from a forum diagnosis.

What not to do

  • Do not remove the casing.
  • Do not repeatedly reset the boiler.
  • Do not adjust gas, fan or combustion settings.
  • Do not open the condensate trap.
  • Do not keep a tap running to force repeated starts.
  • Do not ignore a returning lockout.

When to arrange a repair

Book a repair if a valid demand remains but the flame repeatedly disappears, the boiler retries or locks out, temperature rises abnormally fast, or heating and hot water are unreliable.

Turn it off using its normal control if there is smoke, scorching, water near electrics, a gas smell or any reason to suspect it is unsafe. HSE says a suspected unsafe gas appliance must not be used until checked.

Carbon monoxide safety

Carbon monoxide cannot be seen or smelled. If an alarm sounds or anyone has headache, dizziness, nausea, weakness, confusion, chest pain or breathing difficulty, go outside and seek medical help. Call 999 for severe symptoms.

What to tell the engineer

  • the full Baxi model and exact code;
  • whether heating, hot water or both are affected;
  • the order of demand, fan, flame and shutdown;
  • whether the boiler retries;
  • the cool pressure and temperature pattern;
  • recent weather or gas-supply changes; and
  • recent work on controls, radiators or plumbing.

Frequently asked questions

Can a boiler normally fire for only a few seconds?

Yes, if a tiny demand ends or a protection function completes. Repeated brief firing while demand remains, especially with a code, needs investigation.

Does E133 identify one failed part?

No. Baxi associates it with gas-supply, ignition or flame issues and blocked condensate may also be relevant. The exact model and tests matter.

Should I keep resetting it?

No. Use one reset only when the matching guide instructs it. Frequent lockout is a fault.

Can low pressure cause this?

Low pressure can stop normal operation on relevant models, but check the exact code and cold reading rather than assuming.

Keep a two-mode fault log

For one day, note only naturally occurring heating and hot-water demands. Write down the start time, which service was requested, whether the flame symbol appeared, how long it remained and what the display showed afterwards. Stop collecting evidence once the same failure has been captured.

This separates a boiler that stops only during a low heating demand from one that loses operation during a continuous shower. It also shows whether the fault is intermittent or now happens on every start. Do not alter several controls between observations, because that makes the pattern harder to interpret.

Check ordinary external causes before the visit

Make sure the programmer has not reached the end of a timed period and that a wireless thermostat still has power and connection. Check that the boiler’s normal isolation switch has not been disturbed and that the pressure display is readable. These are observations, not repair steps.

If the property recently had a power interruption, gas-supply work or plumbing work, record the date. Do not cycle the electrical supply as a substitute for the model’s documented reset procedure.

Advice for landlords and managing agents

Ask the occupier for the exact code and a short video of one natural failure rather than asking them to keep restarting the appliance. Establish whether heating, hot water or both are unavailable and whether anyone reports a gas smell, alarm or illness.

Arrange competent attendance promptly when a fault repeats. Keep the engineer’s findings and remedial record with the property file, and do not ask an occupier to bypass controls or continue using an appliance they suspect is unsafe.

Before attendance, keep the boiler area accessible and gather the user manual, previous service notes and any photographs. Do not clear access by moving fixed pipework, electrical equipment or the appliance itself.
