Baxi E125 fault code explained — Incredaboil guide

Baxi E125 fault code explained

On the Baxi boiler ranges covered by the manufacturer’s current error-code table, E125 means a water-circulation fault. The boiler has detected that heated water is not moving through the primary circuit as expected, so it may stop or lock out to protect itself.

E125 describes the fault area, not one guaranteed failed part. Air in the system, restricted circulation, an incorrectly positioned valve, a pump problem, a sensor or connection fault, or another internal condition can produce similar symptoms. A diagnosis needs the exact boiler model and proper testing.

Before doing anything, photograph the display and note the complete model name. Baxi uses different code systems across its product ranges, so an E125 article is only useful when your boiler’s own literature uses that code.

What does “water circulation fault” mean?

When a boiler heats water, that water must be carried away through the heating circuit. The controls compare temperature information and expect a reasonable change while the pump is operating. If heat builds up too quickly or circulation appears inadequate, the boiler can shut down rather than continue under abnormal conditions.

This does not necessarily mean that every radiator will be cold. The fault can appear when heating starts, after the boiler has run for a short time, or when demand changes. A combi boiler may also stop providing hot water if the appliance remains locked out.

Which Baxi boilers can show E125?

Baxi’s current professional error-code page lists E125 within a model group that includes named Compact, Duo-tec, Platinum, Assure, EcoBlue, 600 and 800 products, among others shown on that table. Older and newer appliances can use different formats, including codes with dots and extra digits.

Check the model name in the user guide or on an accessible external label. Do not remove the boiler casing to find it. If the display actually reads E.01.17, E110 or another similar code, record it exactly; those are separate entries and should not be interpreted as E125.

What can cause a Baxi E125 code?

A Gas Safe registered engineer may need to investigate several possibilities, including:

  • Air restricting circulation in part of the heating system.
  • A pump that is not moving enough water.
  • A closed, stuck or incorrectly set valve.
  • A blockage or restriction in the boiler or system pipework.
  • A temperature sensor, wiring or connection problem.
  • A control fault that misreads or responds incorrectly to circulation conditions.
  • System pressure outside the range specified for that model.

These are possible diagnostic areas, not a shopping list. E125 does not tell you which part to replace, and ordering a pump or sensor from the code alone can waste money.

Safe checks you can make

Record the exact code and when it appears

Take a photograph before resetting anything. Note whether E125 appears immediately, after several minutes of heating, when a hot tap is opened, or only after the system has cooled. Tell the engineer whether the boiler makes unusual gurgling, rushing or repeated start-stop noises.

Read the pressure without opening the boiler

Use only the normal display or external pressure gauge. Compare the reading with the operating range in your model’s user guide. If pressure is low and the guide gives a homeowner procedure for your exact filling arrangement, follow that guide only. Stop if you are unsure, if pressure drops again, or if you can see a leak.

Do not turn valves under the boiler at random. Some are service or gas controls, and different models have different filling arrangements.

Check ordinary radiator controls

Make sure the room thermostat is requesting heat and that normal radiator valves have not all been closed. Do not force a seized valve or change hidden commissioning settings. If several radiators remain cold while others heat, note the pattern for the engineer.

Look for visible leaks

Check the floor below the boiler, nearby accessible pipework and radiators. Do not remove panels or reach inside the appliance. If water is near electrical equipment, switch the boiler off at its normal external control if it is safe to do so and arrange help.

Use only the reset described in the user guide

If your exact Baxi guide permits a reset for this condition, try it once. If E125 returns, stop resetting. Repeated attempts cannot restore a failed pump, clear a restriction or repair an internal sensor, and the repeating pattern is useful evidence.

What not to do

  • Do not remove the boiler casing.
  • Do not loosen pump screws, electrical connections or internal valves.
  • Do not drain the boiler or add chemicals to the system as a guess.
  • Do not keep topping up pressure if it repeatedly falls.
  • Do not repeatedly reset the appliance.
  • Do not assume that a hot pipe proves circulation is normal.

Work inside a gas boiler must be carried out by a suitably qualified Gas Safe registered engineer. HSE advises that an appliance suspected to be unsafe should be switched off and left unused until checked.

Can bleeding a radiator clear E125?

Air in radiators can reduce circulation, but E125 does not prove that radiator air is the cause. If a radiator is cold at the top and you already know the correct homeowner procedure, our guide to bleeding a radiator safely explains the limits. Check system pressure afterwards as described in the boiler user guide.

If the code returns, several radiators are affected, pressure behaves abnormally, or you are not confident, stop and book an engineer. Do not bleed components inside the boiler.

Does E125 mean the pump has failed?

Not necessarily. A pump problem is one possible cause of poor circulation, but the same code can result from air, restricted water flow, controls, sensors or connections. The engineer may need model-specific electrical and temperature tests before deciding whether the pump is at fault.

Do not tap, turn or try to free the pump. It is inside the appliance on many models and is not a homeowner-serviceable component.

Why might E125 be intermittent?

Restricted circulation can become more obvious as water heats and demand changes. A component or connection may also behave differently when warm. Note how long the boiler runs before the code appears and whether it happens on central heating, hot water or both.

An intermittent reset does not confirm that the fault has repaired itself. If E125 returns, arrange a proper diagnosis.

When should you book an engineer?

Book a Gas Safe registered engineer when E125 persists after the single user-guide action, returns repeatedly, or is accompanied by leaking, banging, electrical tripping or rapid temperature changes. A professional can check circulation against the model instructions without guessing.

If you smell gas, do not use electrical switches or naked flames. Open doors and windows, turn off the gas at the meter only if you know how, leave the area, and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.

What should you tell the engineer?

  • The full Baxi model and exact display code.
  • Whether the fault affects heating, hot water or both.
  • The pressure reading when cold and when the fault appears.
  • Any recent radiator bleeding, topping up or system work.
  • Which radiators heat and which remain cold.
  • Any visible leak or unusual noise.
  • Whether one reset cleared the code and for how long.

Frequently asked questions

What does E125 mean on a Baxi boiler?

Baxi defines E125 as a water-circulation fault on the applicable ranges listed in its current error-code table.

Can I keep using the boiler?

If the boiler is locked out, do not try to bypass it. If the code clears but returns, arrange an engineer. Stop using any appliance you suspect is unsafe.

Will topping up the pressure fix E125?

Only if low pressure is genuinely present and your model guide authorises the correct homeowner procedure. E125 has other possible causes, so repeated topping up is not a repair.

Is E125 the same on every Baxi?

No. Confirm the exact model and full code because Baxi products use several code formats.
