Baxi Platinum Compact E129 fault code: flame loss during calibration — Incredaboil guide

Baxi Platinum Compact E129 fault code: what it means and what to do

If your Baxi Platinum Compact displays E129, the boiler has recorded repeated flame loss during a particular part of its ignition and calibration process. Baxi’s current fault-code table gives the full meaning as “Safety error for frequent loss of flame with max correction during ignition during Calibration Function.”

That wording is technical, but the homeowner message is straightforward: the boiler could not maintain the flame reliably while its controls were carrying out an automatic operating check, so it stopped for safety. E129 is not a request for you to alter calibration settings, and it does not identify one definite failed component.

What does “Calibration Function” mean?

Calibration is part of the boiler’s controlled operation. It allows the appliance to check and adjust how it runs within its designed limits. The “max correction” wording means the control reached the extent of the correction available during ignition, yet the flame-loss condition was still detected.

This process is not the same as setting your room thermostat, changing the heating temperature or using a smartphone control. There is no homeowner calibration to perform. Service menus, combustion adjustments and internal settings must be left to a suitably qualified Gas Safe registered engineer.

What you may notice with E129

The boiler may try to start and then stop, leaving E129 on the display. You may lose heating, hot water or both. The code can appear during a demand for hot water or when the heating is due to start, but the display alone does not prove whether the original demand caused the underlying problem.

Before arranging a repair, safely record:

  • the complete E129 code exactly as shown;
  • whether heating, hot water or both were being requested;
  • whether you heard the boiler start and stop;
  • whether the problem followed a gas-supply interruption or recent work;
  • whether other gas appliances appear to have a supply;
  • whether the code returned after one reset permitted by the user guide.

These details help describe the pattern. They do not establish the cause and should not be used to decide which internal part to replace.

How E129 differs from E128

Baxi lists E128 as a safety error for frequent loss of flame. E129 is more specific: it adds maximum correction during ignition while the Calibration Function is taking place. Both concern repeated flame loss, but the extra E129 detail matters to the engineer.

Do not treat the codes as interchangeable or shorten the report to “ignition fault”. Give the exact code. That reduces the risk of an engineer preparing for the wrong fault or overlooking when the flame loss occurred.

Does E129 mean there is a gas leak?

No. E129 does not prove that gas is leaking into the property. It reports a flame-loss safety condition. Even so, any actual smell of gas must be treated as an emergency, whether or not the boiler displays a code.

If you smell gas, turn off the supply at the meter only if it is safe, open doors and windows, avoid flames and electrical switches, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 from a safe place.

If a carbon-monoxide alarm sounds, move everyone into fresh air. Symptoms can include headache, dizziness, nausea, weakness, confusion, chest pain and breathlessness. Seek medical help, and call 999 if anyone is seriously unwell. Do not use the boiler again until it has been checked.

Can you reset a Baxi Platinum Compact E129?

Follow only the reset instructions in the user guide for your exact Baxi Platinum Compact. Do not reset when you smell gas, a carbon-monoxide alarm has activated or the boiler appears damaged. Where the guide permits it and no emergency signs are present, one reset may show whether the lockout was temporary.

If E129 remains or returns, stop resetting. Repeated resets do not repair unstable ignition or flame loss. They may also remove useful timing information while repeatedly asking the boiler to attempt the same failed sequence.

Safe checks that stay outside the boiler

You can confirm that the property has electricity and that the boiler controls are switched on normally. Check whether a prepayment gas meter has credit, if relevant, and whether another gas appliance appears to have a supply. Do not repeatedly operate other appliances if you smell gas or suspect a safety problem.

Look at the boiler display and note any additional symbols. From ground level, you can observe whether severe snow, ice or building work is close to the outside flue terminal, but do not touch, cover or clear the terminal. Do not remove the boiler casing.

Why E129 needs professional investigation

The fault code records the point at which the boiler’s safety system stopped operation. It does not reveal the complete chain of events. A Gas Safe registered engineer may need to assess the gas supply, ignition and flame-monitoring process, combustion conditions, flue operation, electrical connections and the appliance controls using approved procedures.

Those checks interact with safety-critical parts. Online instructions for adjusting a gas valve, cleaning electrodes, changing combustion values, entering service menus or testing live wiring are not suitable homeowner tasks. Replacing a part because it is mentioned in a forum can waste money and leave the real problem unresolved.

What not to do

  • Do not open the casing or attempt internal tests.
  • Do not alter calibration or combustion settings.
  • Do not work on the gas valve, burner, electrodes, fan, flue, wiring or control board.
  • Do not repeatedly reset a returning E129 code.
  • Do not ignore a gas smell, carbon-monoxide alarm or physical symptoms.

When to book a repair

Book professional repair if E129 will not clear through the one permitted user reset, if it returns, or if heating and hot water are unreliable. A boiler that restarts briefly but repeatedly loses flame still needs attention. Tell the engineer the model, exact E129 code, affected services and what happened immediately before the lockout.

Quick answers

What does Baxi Platinum Compact E129 mean?

It is a safety error for frequent flame loss with maximum correction during ignition while the Calibration Function is operating.

Is E129 the same as E128?

No. E128 reports frequent flame loss generally; E129 adds the specific ignition and calibration circumstances.

Can I calibrate the boiler myself?

No. Calibration and combustion work are safety-critical engineer tasks, not homeowner settings.

Does E129 prove a gas leak?

No, but any actual smell of gas requires immediate emergency action.

Should I keep resetting it?

No. Use only one reset where the exact user guide permits it. If the code remains or returns, arrange repair.
