Boiler works after reset but fails again the next day

If a boiler works after a reset but fails again hours or a day later, the reset has cleared the lockout, not necessarily the cause. Record the exact fault code and what the boiler was doing, then stop repeatedly resetting it. A returning fault needs diagnosis rather than another restart.

One reset may be appropriate when the user manual tells you to do it. Repeated lockouts are the boiler protecting itself.

What a boiler reset actually does

A modern boiler monitors conditions needed for safe operation. If it detects a problem, it may stop and show a code or warning. A reset tells the control to try its start-up sequence again.

It does not repair a weak component, restore circulation, seal a leak or correct an unreliable electrical signal. If the condition is intermittent, the boiler may run normally until it appears again.

Write down the code before resetting

The exact letters, numbers and symbols matter. Photograph the display before pressing anything, because a successful reset may replace the fault with the normal temperature display.

Use the current user instructions for the full model number. The same-looking code can mean different things on different boiler ranges, so do not rely on a generic list or assume a part has failed.

Reset only as the manufacturer describes

Reset methods differ. Some boilers use a button, some a selector and some an on-screen menu. Follow the user section of the correct manual and do not hold controls for longer or repeat the process more often than instructed.

Baxi’s homeowner guidance says frequent lockout indicates a fault and the installer or service engineer should be contacted. That is a useful general boundary even though the control sequence varies by brand.

Why can it work for a whole day?

An intermittent fault can disappear when the boiler cools, when weather changes or when a particular heating or hot-water demand ends. The next demand may recreate the condition and cause another lockout.

That pattern does not prove the boiler is safe or that the fault is minor. The time between failures can be valuable evidence for an engineer.

Separate heating from hot-water demand

Note whether the failure happens when the radiators start, while a hot tap is running or when the boiler changes between the two. On a system with a cylinder, record whether heating, hot water or both were scheduled.

If one service keeps working, say so. For example, hot water working while the heating fails points the diagnosis in a different direction from a complete lockout.

Check only homeowner-visible information

You can safely record the display, visible system pressure, thermostat demand and whether electrical power is present. Compare the cold pressure with the range stated in the model instructions rather than using a universal number.

Do not top up repeatedly, remove the casing, inspect ignition parts, open a condensate trap, loosen pump screws or test wiring. Those actions can create new risks and erase useful evidence.

Weather can expose an intermittent problem

A fault that returns on very cold mornings may coincide with longer heating demand or an external condensate pipe freezing. A problem that appears only in windy or wet weather also needs to be reported.

Do not diagnose a frozen condensate from the code alone. Follow only the model manufacturer’s safe homeowner advice for an accessible external pipe; never work at height or dismantle boiler parts.

Falling pressure is a separate clue

If the pressure is lower each time the boiler fails, record the cold reading and look for visible water around radiators and accessible pipework. Repeatedly adding water is not a repair.

A steady pressure reading does not rule out other causes. Ignition, circulation, sensing, controls and electrical supply can all produce different intermittent patterns.

Do not guess from the delay alone

A boiler that lasts ten minutes after reset and one that lasts until the next morning may have very different faults, but neither interval identifies a component. Proper diagnosis uses the code, operating history and safe tests.

Avoid ordering a part from an online fault list. Codes often describe what the boiler detected, not which part must be replaced.

Create a short fault timeline

Record the date and time, displayed code, pressure, weather, thermostat setting and whether heating or hot water was in use. Add how long the boiler ran after the reset and any noise, leak or smell.

Two or three clear entries are more useful than repeated restarts. If a landlord or managing agent is responsible, send the timeline with photographs so the repair can be triaged properly.

When to stop resetting

Stop if the same fault returns, the boiler repeatedly attempts to ignite, the pressure keeps falling, or there is a leak, burning smell, overheating or unusual noise. Leave the boiler off if its instructions say to do so and arrange competent help.

Never reset after a gas smell or carbon monoxide alarm. Leave the property and follow emergency gas advice instead.

What an engineer may need to test

Depending on the code and symptoms, an engineer may check ignition and flame proving, gas supply at the appliance, circulation, temperature sensors, condensate drainage, controls and electrical connections. These are not homeowner tests.

Provide the exact model and fault timeline when booking. It can help the engineer prepare without pretending the diagnosis is already known.

Common questions

Is it safe to keep using the boiler after a reset?

If the manual permits one reset and the boiler then operates normally, monitor it. If the fault returns or anything seems unsafe, stop and arrange a check.

Why has the code disappeared?

A successful reset often returns the display to its normal operating screen. That is why photographing the original code matters.

Will turning the power off fix it?

Power cycling may restart the controls but does not repair a recurring fault. It may also clear useful information. Use only the correct user reset procedure.
