You cannot tell whether a boiler fault is covered by warranty from the fault code alone. Coverage depends on the boiler’s registration, installation date, warranty terms, service history and—most importantly—the diagnosed cause. A failed boiler component may be covered, while an external system, installation, sludge, scale, frozen pipe or accidental damage may not be.
Before paying for a repair, find the serial number, warranty certificate, installation invoice, completed Benchmark checklist and annual service records. Contact the manufacturer or warranty provider before authorising third-party work, unless urgent safety action is required.
Warranty, guarantee and statutory rights are not identical
Manufacturers often call their included cover a guarantee, while “warranty” may also describe paid or insurance-backed protection. Everyday use blurs the terms, so read the actual document rather than relying on the label.
A manufacturer guarantee usually promises to repair or replace covered boiler components for a stated period, subject to conditions. An installer warranty may cover workmanship or installation. A home-emergency policy, boiler plan or extended warranty is a separate contract with its own excesses, limits and exclusions.
These arrangements add to legal consumer rights; they do not erase them. GOV.UK states that customers can retain rights to repair or replacement regardless of whether a warranty or guarantee has expired. The correct legal route depends on what was supplied, who sold it, when, and which UK nation applies, so Citizens Advice can help with an individual dispute.
The five checks that decide most warranty claims
1. Is the boiler registered?
Extended manufacturer cover often requires registration soon after installation. Baxi currently says its boiler warranty should be registered within 30 days. Ideal’s standard terms require registration within 30 days for the full period, while Worcester Bosch says the product must be registered and may provide different lengths depending on how registration was completed.
Do not assume the installer completed it. Search your email, online manufacturer account or warranty certificate using the serial number and installation address.
2. Was it installed and commissioned correctly?
The Benchmark commissioning checklist records installation and commissioning information. Baxi, Worcester Bosch and Ideal all refer to correct commissioning or completed records in their conditions. Missing paperwork does not itself prove poor installation, but it can affect a manufacturer claim and makes evidence harder.
3. Has it been serviced every year?
Annual servicing is a central condition in the published terms of the major manufacturers covered here. Worcester Bosch says yearly servicing is required to keep its guarantee valid and may ask for evidence. Baxi says annual servicing is needed, and Ideal’s standard warranty terms say the boiler must be serviced at the end of each 12-month period by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Keep invoices and the completed service record. A gas-safety check for a landlord and a manufacturer-standard boiler service are not automatically the same appointment.
4. Is the failed part inside the covered product?
Manufacturer cover generally focuses on defects or breakdowns in the boiler as supplied. External components can be separate: radiators, household pipework, third-party controls, pumps, cylinders, system filters and condensate drainage may have different cover. Worcester Bosch’s published terms expressly exclude various external system components.
5. What caused the fault?
A diagnosis matters more than the display code. The same ignition or overheating message can be caused by a covered internal component or by an excluded installation, supply or system problem. Manufacturers commonly exclude damage linked to misuse, third-party interference, inadequate maintenance, sludge, scale, poor water quality, incorrect installation or external services.
What faults are often more likely to be covered?
Subject to the terms, a mechanical or electrical breakdown caused by defective materials or manufacture within the active warranty period is the typical core of manufacturer cover. Ideal’s standard terms describe a parts-and-labour repair service for qualifying mechanical or electrical breakdown caused by defective workmanship or materials. Worcester Bosch describes repair or replacement of product components faulty in material or manufacture.
Examples might include a qualifying internal sensor, fan, pump, control board or valve that has failed without an excluded external cause. Those are only examples: no one should promise coverage until the authorised engineer diagnoses the fault and the provider accepts the claim.
What is commonly excluded?
- radiators, external pipework, cylinders and third-party controls;
- incorrect installation or commissioning;
- sludge, scale, aggressive system water or blocked filters;
- frozen or incorrectly installed condensate pipework;
- gas, electricity or water-supply problems;
- accidental damage, misuse or unauthorised alteration;
- routine servicing and consumable maintenance items;
- inaccessible or unsafe working conditions; and
- faults reported after cover has expired.
Exclusions vary. For example, Ideal’s published terms exclude faults caused by central-heating-system design, installation or maintenance, sludge, scale and incorrect condensate disposal. Worcester Bosch excludes several external system components and requires the product to be used and maintained to instructions. Always read the terms that applied when your boiler was installed, not only today’s promotional page.
Baxi warranty checks
Baxi’s current warranty information lists different periods by boiler range and makes them subject to timely registration, a completed Benchmark checklist and annual service. Some offers have extra product requirements: Baxi says its current 800-range ten-year cover depends on a magnetic filter being fitted and maintained, otherwise cover reverts to a shorter period.
Use the My Baxi portal or contact Baxi with the serial number to confirm the actual record. Do not infer the warranty length from the badge or model name alone because promotions and installation dates change.
Worcester Bosch guarantee checks
Worcester Bosch provides an online product-guarantee account and states that annual servicing is needed to keep cover valid. Its terms cover qualifying product-component defects and set out conditions, evidence and exclusions. External heating-system parts and third-party controls may sit outside the boiler guarantee.
Have the exact product code and serial number ready. Worcester Bosch’s service terms say it may request proof of annual maintenance and can charge where guarantee conditions are not met or the problem is not covered.
Ideal warranty checks
Ideal’s standard terms require Gas Safe installation and commissioning, completion of the Benchmark record, timely registration for the full period and annual service. They describe parts-and-labour cover for qualifying internal breakdown, while excluding several system, installation, water-quality and third-party causes.
Check the certificate for the actual length because different ranges and promotions can carry different periods. A replacement part fitted during a claim does not necessarily restart the boiler’s original warranty term.
What documents should you gather?
- warranty or guarantee certificate;
- boiler model, product code and serial number;
- installation invoice and date;
- completed Benchmark commissioning checklist;
- Building Regulations Compliance Certificate where applicable;
- annual service invoices and service-record entries;
- fault-code photographs and a description of symptoms;
- records for any previous authorised repairs; and
- proof of ownership or tenancy authority where requested.
If paperwork is missing, contact the installer and manufacturer rather than assuming there is no cover. Online registration systems may hold records that you do not have on paper.
Should you book an independent repair first?
Contact the warranty provider before authorising work. Worcester Bosch’s terms say it will not reimburse third-party repair costs unless the work was authorised in advance and in writing. Other providers may take a similar approach. An unauthorised internal repair can also complicate evidence or breach conditions.
Urgent safety always comes first. If you smell gas or a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, leave the area and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. Tell the warranty provider what emergency action was taken and keep all reports.
What if the engineer says “not covered”?
Ask for the diagnosis, relevant exclusion and any proposed charge in writing. Clarify whether the problem is in the boiler, installation or external heating system. If you disagree, use the provider’s complaints process and retain photographs, service records and reports.
Your statutory rights may still be relevant against the seller or installer even when manufacturer cover does not apply. GOV.UK says goods must be as described, of satisfactory quality and fit for purpose, while services must be performed with reasonable care and skill. Time limits and evidence rules apply, so get individual advice from Citizens Advice rather than relying on a general article.
Buying a home with a boiler warranty
Do not assume cover automatically transfers to a new owner. Ask for the certificate, terms, service history and installation records, then check transfer rules with the provider. Confirm the serial number on the documents matches the boiler.
Frequently asked questions
Is every fault within ten years covered?
No. A ten-year period still has conditions and exclusions. The cause, maintenance record, covered product and registration all matter.Different boilers have different warranty lengths.
Does a fault code prove a part has failed?
No. A code describes what the boiler detected. External supply, installation or system conditions can produce the same code as an internal component fault.
Will a missed service invalidate cover?
It can under published manufacturer terms. Contact the provider with the dates and evidence for a decision; do not assume or alter records.
Is sludge covered?
Often not under a boiler manufacturer guarantee. Ideal specifically excludes damage from sludge and corrosion in its standard terms. Check your exact policy and any separate installer guarantee.
Does warranty cover the whole heating system?
Usually not. Boiler cover, installer workmanship, radiators, controls, cylinders and household pipework may each have different providers and terms.
