Ideal boiler radiators heat when hot water is used

If radiators warm whenever you open a hot tap, first establish whether the heating was genuinely off and whether you have an Ideal combi or a boiler with a hot-water cylinder. The same symptom can point towards different controls and valves on those two system types.

A little warmth in one nearby pipe is different from several radiators heating across the home. Record the pattern without opening the boiler, electrical controls or motorised valves.

What should normally happen on an Ideal combi?

An Ideal combi provides central heating and instantaneous domestic hot water. When a hot tap opens, the boiler recognises water flow and directs heat to the domestic-hot-water side. Current Logic Combi user guidance shows separate tap and radiator demand indications and separate summer and winter modes.

With central heating off and only a hot-water demand present, radiators should not normally become meaningfully hot throughout. Residual warmth close to the boiler can occur, but sustained heating across several radiators needs investigation.

What if there is a hot-water cylinder?

A system or heat-only boiler commonly heats a cylinder through separate pipework controlled by motorised valves and thermostats. When the cylinder asks for heat, the boiler and pump may run even though the room thermostat is not calling.

If a heating zone valve also opens, does not close properly or receives an unintended signal, some heat may reach radiators during cylinder recovery. That is a different arrangement from a combi’s internal water routing, so identifying the system type prevents a misleading diagnosis.

Confirm the heating is actually off

Check the room thermostat target, programmer schedule, app status and any boost or advance setting. A scheduled heating period can overlap with shower or kitchen use and make the hot tap appear responsible.

Set the heating to its normal off or summer mode using the documented user control. Do not isolate electrical supplies or change installer settings. Wait for the system to cool before making one ordinary hot-water draw.

Watch the display during one normal test

On compatible Logic Combi models, the display distinguishes hot-water activity from central-heating activity with tap and radiator symbols or messages. Photograph the screen before the tap opens, while hot water runs and after it closes.

Record whether only the tap indication appears or whether the boiler also shows a central-heating demand. Display designs differ across Ideal ranges, so use the matching user guide rather than assuming a symbol has the same meaning on every model.

How much of the radiator gets warm?

After the heating has been off long enough to cool, note which radiators warm and how far the heat spreads. One radiator nearest the boiler becoming slightly warm at one end is different from every radiator heating from top to bottom.

Do not repeatedly feel hot pipes or remove radiator covers. A simple room list—first radiator, upstairs radiators, all radiators—gives the engineer a useful picture of water movement.

How long does the warmth last?

Brief warmth that fades soon after the tap closes may reflect a small amount of residual heat moving through connected pipework. Radiators that continue heating for the whole shower, become fully hot or stay hot afterwards suggest a more substantial unwanted flow.

Record the duration of normal hot-water use and when the radiator first changes. Do not leave a tap running purely to extend the test.

Preheat can explain firing, but not every warm radiator

Some Ideal combis offer domestic-hot-water preheat. Current Logic MAX Combi2 guidance says preheat can fire the boiler periodically to keep the domestic-hot-water heat exchanger ready, and its timed mode can learn use patterns.

That can explain why a boiler fires when no radiator heat was requested. It does not automatically explain radiators becoming hot. Record the preheat setting shown to the user, but do not enter service menus or disable safety functions.

The internal diverter valve is one possibility on a combi

Ideal’s professional Logic Combi documentation includes a diverter-valve actuator and body within the appliance and specifies checks after service work in both domestic-hot-water and central-heating modes. If water is not being routed as intended, radiator warming during a hot-water draw can be one symptom.

It is not proof of a failed diverter valve. Control demand, wiring, circulation and other hydraulic effects can look similar. The casing must remain closed and internal valve tests are for a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Motorised valves matter on cylinder systems

Ideal heat-only installation guidance shows common systems with a three-port valve or separate two-port valves serving heating and a cylinder. Those external valves decide where heated water travels.

A heating engineer may need to check valve movement, end switches, thermostats, wiring and system balance. Do not remove actuator covers or move electrical wiring. Even when the valve body is outside the boiler, it can involve mains electricity and hot water.

Check whether the symptom affects every hot outlet

Try one other hot outlet during ordinary use after the system has cooled. If radiators warm with any hot tap, the link is more likely to be the system’s hot-water operation. If it happens only during a long shower, duration and boiler output may simply make unwanted heat easier to notice.

If radiators warm when no tap is open, look again at schedules, frost protection, preheat and cylinder recovery rather than assuming the tap is the only trigger.

Pressure changes are useful supporting evidence

Read the pressure only when the system is cool and compare it with the exact Ideal guide. Record any unusually large rise while the radiators warm, but do not add or remove water unless the user instructions call for it.

Unexpected radiator heat does not usually become clearer by changing system pressure. A stable, documented reading is more useful than repeated adjustments.

Possible professional diagnostic areas

For a combi, an engineer may check demand signals, fault history, domestic-water flow recognition, internal water routing, diverter operation and temperature response. For a cylinder system, checks may include motorised valves, cylinder and room thermostats, programmer outputs, wiring and hydraulic circulation.

The exact model and system layout determine the safe procedure. Do not buy a diverter valve or actuator based only on this symptom.

What not to do

  • Do not remove the Ideal boiler casing.
  • Do not force or dismantle an internal diverter valve.
  • Do not remove covers from motorised valves or wiring centres.
  • Do not repeatedly run hot water just to heat the radiators.
  • Do not drain, repressurise or bleed the system as a guess.
  • Do not enter installer menus or change hidden parameters.

When to arrange a repair

Book professional diagnosis if several radiators become clearly hot whenever domestic hot water runs with heating disabled, the behaviour is becoming more pronounced, hot-water temperature is unstable, controls show an unexplained heating demand or the boiler displays a fault.

Also arrange prompt help if overheating, leaking water, electrical tripping, scorching or abnormal noises accompany the symptom. If the appliance is suspected to be unsafe, HSE says it must not be used until checked by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

What to tell the engineer

  • the full Ideal model and whether there is a hot-water cylinder;
  • the heating mode, schedule and thermostat target;
  • which display symbols appear during hot-water use;
  • which radiators warm and how hot they become;
  • how quickly warmth starts and how long it lasts;
  • whether every hot outlet produces the same result; and
  • any recent control, valve, plumbing or electrical work.

For landlords and managing agents

Ask the occupier for a photograph of the display and a short description of the controls rather than asking them to access valves or the boiler. Record whether comfort is affected and whether there are leaks, codes or safety concerns.

Gas appliances, flues and landlord-owned pipework must be maintained safely. Use a competent Gas Safe registered engineer for gas work and preserve the repair record with the property file.

Frequently asked questions

Can a combi heat radiators while a hot tap is running?

It should normally direct heat to domestic hot water during the draw. Significant radiator heating with the heating demand off needs assessment; a little residual warmth near the boiler is not the same thing.

Does this prove the diverter valve is stuck?

No. It is one professional diagnostic area on a combi, but overlapping control demand and other circulation effects must be ruled out.

Why does my boiler fire when heating is off?

Hot-water demand, cylinder recovery, preheat and frost protection can all make a boiler fire without a room-heating request. The display and system type help identify which.

Can I turn radiator valves off?

Do not use radiator valves as a substitute for repairing unwanted circulation. Keep normal settings and describe the pattern to the engineer unless the manufacturer or engineer advises otherwise.
