Ideal C2 fault code explained
If your Ideal boiler is showing C2, Ideal Heating’s published fault-code guidance identifies it as a BCC Chip fault. This points to the boiler’s internal control or configuration system, so it is not a code to investigate by removing the casing.
The safe first step is a single reset carried out exactly as the user guide for your boiler describes. If C2 returns, remains on the display or the boiler will not restart normally, stop resetting it and arrange an engineer visit.
What does Ideal fault code C2 mean?
Ideal’s fault-code list gives the meaning of a flashing C and 2 as “BCC Chip”. The manufacturer advises resetting the boiler and, if that does not resolve the fault, contacting Ideal while quoting C2.
The code is associated with the boiler’s internal electronic configuration. A homeowner cannot confirm the cause from the display alone, and the correct diagnosis may depend on the exact model, its controls and any recent work carried out on the boiler.
Which Ideal boilers use the C2 code?
Ideal publishes C2 in its general boiler fault-code guidance, but that public page does not provide a complete model-by-model list. Display codes and reset methods can differ between Ideal ranges and generations. Check the model name on the front of the appliance, then compare the code with that model’s official user guide.
If your manual does not list C2, still record the code exactly as shown. A photo of the display is useful because similar-looking letters and numbers can easily be misread.
What can I safely check?
- Photograph the display before pressing anything.
- Confirm the exact boiler model from the outside label or user paperwork.
- Note whether there has been a recent power cut or electrical work.
- Note whether a control, display board or boiler component has recently been changed.
- Check whether the heating and hot water have both stopped.
- If the user guide permits it, try one normal reset.
Do not remove the boiler casing, touch a circuit board or chip, move internal wiring, or attempt to programme the boiler. Those checks belong to a suitably qualified engineer.
Why might C2 appear?
C2 tells the engineer where to begin diagnosis, but it does not prove that a particular part needs replacing. The visit may involve checking the boiler’s model-specific configuration, the relationship between its control components, electrical connections and the history of any recent work. That is why a display code should not be treated as a parts list.
Will resetting clear C2?
A reset may clear a temporary interruption, which is why Ideal includes it as the first action. If the code returns, repeated resets are unlikely to identify the underlying cause and may make the fault history less clear. Leave the boiler switched on only if it is otherwise operating normally and there are no signs of danger.
When should I stop using the boiler?
Turn the appliance off and seek urgent professional advice if you smell gas, a carbon-monoxide alarm sounds, you see scorching or water reaching electrical parts, or anyone develops symptoms that could be linked to carbon monoxide. If you smell gas, do not operate electrical switches or use a naked flame; follow the emergency instructions from the Gas Safe Register and the gas emergency service.
What should I tell the engineer?
Have the following ready when you book:
- the exact code, including whether it flashes;
- the full boiler model;
- a clear photo of the display;
- what happened immediately before the code appeared;
- whether a reset changed anything; and
- details of any recent boiler, control or electrical work.
This information helps the engineer arrive with a clearer picture of the problem while keeping the diagnosis safe and model-specific.
