Ideal F4 fault code explained — Incredaboil guide

The Ideal F4 fault code means a flow thermistor fault. On some Ideal boilers the related display may be L4 rather than F4. The flow thermistor is a temperature sensor used by the boiler’s controls to monitor the temperature of water leaving the heat exchanger.

Ideal’s homeowner guidance says to restart the boiler once. If the fault remains, contact Ideal while the appliance is under warranty or arrange a Gas Safe registered engineer. Do not remove the boiler casing or try to test the sensor or its wiring yourself.

What does Ideal F4 mean?

Ideal currently describes a flashing F4 as “Flow Thermistor”. The manufacturer’s Logic Combi ESP1, Instinct2, Esprit Eco2 and Exclusive2 technical literature identifies F4 or L4 as a flow-thermistor fault.

This tells an engineer which part of the control system has reported an abnormal reading. It does not prove that the sensor itself must be replaced. The cause can only be established through proper testing using the exact technical information for the model.

What does the flow thermistor do?

A thermistor is a temperature-sensitive electrical component. Its resistance changes as temperature changes, allowing the boiler’s control board to judge the temperature of the water flowing out towards the heating system.

If the control cannot obtain a believable reading, it may stop or lock out the boiler. That safety response helps prevent the appliance from operating without reliable temperature information.

Which Ideal boilers use the F4 or L4 description?

The meaning is confirmed in current Ideal guidance for the Logic Combi range and in manufacturer literature for several related families, including:

  • Ideal Logic Combi 24, 30 and 35;
  • Ideal Logic Combi ESP1;
  • Ideal Instinct2;
  • Ideal Esprit Eco2;
  • Ideal Exclusive2.

Ideal has produced many boiler ranges and control versions. Some use a different display convention, so always check the model name and the user guide for that exact appliance. Do not assume that every Ideal boiler uses F4 in precisely the same way.

What symptoms might appear with F4?

The boiler may stop providing heating, hot water or both. It may show F4 continuously or alternate characters on a small display. Some models may show L4 for the related condition.

A boiler that works briefly after restarting and then displays the code again still has a fault that needs diagnosis. Repeated resets are not a repair.

Can I reset an Ideal F4 fault?

Ideal’s homeowner guidance says to restart the appliance. Use only the restart or reset procedure in your boiler’s own user guide, because the control layout differs between ranges.

If the code returns, stop resetting it. Ideal specifically advises contacting the manufacturer if the boiler is under warranty or a Gas Safe registered engineer if it is outside warranty.

Do not turn the power on and off repeatedly, remove the casing, unplug internal connectors, measure the thermistor or try to replace it. Those are internal diagnostic tasks.

Safe checks you can make

Without opening the appliance, you can:

  • write down whether the display says F4 or L4;
  • photograph the closed boiler and the fault display;
  • find the exact model name in the user guide or on an accessible label;
  • note whether heating, hot water or both stopped;
  • check whether the boiler is still covered by an Ideal warranty;
  • make sure the boiler is accessible for the engineer.

The system pressure is useful background information, but F4 is not Ideal’s published low-pressure code. Do not top up the system solely because F4 is displayed unless a separate pressure reading and your model’s instructions show that topping up is needed.

What might cause the code?

Ideal’s engineering fault-finding charts direct the engineer to check the flow thermistor, its electrical connections, the wiring path and the boiler control board. These are possible diagnostic areas, not a homeowner parts list.

A qualified engineer will test the component against the manufacturer’s values and inspect the relevant connections before deciding what needs attention. That avoids replacing a sensor when the fault lies elsewhere.

Can a thermostat cause F4?

A room thermostat controls when the home asks for heat. F4 concerns the boiler’s flow-temperature sensing circuit. Changing room-thermostat batteries or schedules is therefore unlikely to clear a genuine F4 fault.

If your room thermostat also has a separate problem, mention it at the booking, but do not confuse a heating-control issue with the boiler’s displayed fault code.

Is F4 the same as low water pressure?

No. Ideal uses F1 for low water pressure on the affected Logic-style controls. F4 is associated with the flow thermistor. A low gauge reading may be a separate issue, but it does not change the published meaning of F4.

Is F4 dangerous?

The code is a safety-related boiler fault, but it does not by itself mean that gas or carbon monoxide is leaking. The correct response is to leave the casing closed and arrange diagnosis if one approved restart does not restore normal operation.

If you smell gas, suspect carbon monoxide, see scorching, or a carbon-monoxide alarm sounds, do not treat that as an ordinary F4 appointment. Leave the property, avoid electrical switches and naked flames, and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.

What should I tell the engineer?

Provide the exact model, the full code, a photograph of the display and a short description of what happened before the boiler stopped. Say whether heating, hot water or both are affected, and whether a single restart changed anything.

This information helps the engineer bring the correct model literature and prepare for the visit without asking you to investigate inside the boiler.

The short answer

Ideal F4 means a flow-thermistor fault, with L4 used for the related condition on some models. Restart the boiler once using its own user instructions. If the fault returns or the boiler does not operate, keep the casing closed and arrange an engineer.
