Ideal F8 fault code explained
If your Ideal boiler shows F8, the meaning depends on the precise model. Current Ideal manuals for the Instinct2 and Exclusive2 describe F8/L8 as a lockout due to a parameter fault. Logic Code Combi ESP1 and Logic Combi ESP1 manuals group F8/L8 with a PCB that is unconfigured or faulty.
In every case, this is an internal control-configuration fault. It is not a pressure warning and it is not something a homeowner should try to reprogram.
What is a parameter fault?
Parameters are internal settings that tell the boiler’s control electronics how the appliance is configured. They are not the everyday heating and hot-water temperatures available on the front panel.
If required settings are missing, incompatible or not accepted, the boiler cannot rely on its control configuration and may lock out. Depending on the model, the service information may refer to reprogramming the PCB or to an unconfigured or faulty PCB.
F8 does not prove a new circuit board is required. The engineer must first confirm the model, configuration status and fault history.
Which Ideal boilers use F8 or L8?
Official Ideal documentation currently shows F8/L8 on several ranges, including:
- Ideal Instinct2
- Ideal Exclusive2
- Ideal Logic Code Combi ESP1
- Ideal Logic Combi ESP1
The wording is not identical across those manuals. Instinct2 and Exclusive2 call it a parameter-fault lockout; Logic-family manuals may describe the PCB as unconfigured or faulty. That is why the full model name matters before any repair decision is made.
Can I clear F8 myself?
Do not enter installer menus, change service parameters or attempt to program the boiler. Incorrect settings can affect how the appliance operates, and the relevant work belongs with a competent engineer using the approved service instructions.
You can record the full display, check whether the fault appeared after a power interruption or recent boiler work, and locate the exact model name. If the user guide for that model offers a normal restart, follow it once. If F8 or L8 returns, stop restarting and arrange a repair.
Why might F8 appear after other work?
A parameter lockout can be associated with the control configuration, so the timing may be relevant if the display appeared after a PCB change, electrical interruption or service visit. That timing is useful information, but it does not establish who or what caused the fault.
Avoid trying online programming sequences from a different Ideal model. Similar-looking boilers can require different configuration data, and a sequence intended for another product could make the situation worse.
What will the engineer do?
The engineer will identify the exact boiler and check its fault history and control configuration against the correct Ideal service documentation. They can then determine whether the PCB needs approved programming, whether a connection or supply problem is involved, or whether a component has failed.
This is a controlled repair rather than a front-panel setting change. The boiler casing should remain closed until the engineer attends.
Is F8 a gas emergency?
F8 is described as a parameter or PCB configuration fault, not as confirmation of a gas leak. Arrange a repair and do not bypass the lockout.
If you smell gas, suspect carbon monoxide, or a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 and follow its instructions.
