Ideal L2 fault code: what it means and what to do
Ideal fault code L2 means flame loss or ignition lockout. The boiler tried to light, or could not maintain a confirmed flame, so it stopped operation safely.
Ideal lists L2 across several Logic-family boilers, but controls and homeowner instructions can vary. Use the user guide for your exact model.
What does Ideal L2 mean?
A modern boiler must confirm that the burner has lit correctly. If ignition does not succeed, or the flame signal is lost, the boiler locks out and displays L2 rather than continuing to release gas.
The code describes the lockout, not a single failed component. The reason may be outside the boiler, such as an interrupted gas supply or blocked frozen condensate pipe, or it may require internal checks by an engineer.
What can you check safely?
- If you use a prepayment gas meter, check that it has credit.
- Check whether another gas appliance is also without supply, provided there is no smell of gas.
- If the weather is freezing, look for an obvious ice blockage in the accessible external condensate pipe.
- Check the boiler’s user display and note any other code or unusual gurgling noise.
Ideal also advises checking that the accessible gas-isolation valve beneath the boiler has not been turned off. Only look at it if it is clearly identified in your user guide; do not force a valve or alter any internal gas control.
What if the condensate pipe is frozen?
If the accessible plastic condensate pipe outside is visibly frozen, follow the manufacturer’s homeowner instructions. Warm the exposed section gradually with a hot-water bottle, warm cloth or warm—not boiling—water. Watch for slippery ice on the ground.
Do not disconnect the pipe or pour boiling water over it. If you cannot reach it safely, leave it alone and arrange help.
Can I reset an Ideal boiler showing L2?
Ideal’s guidance allows the boiler to be reset after the safe external checks. Follow the reset method in the user guide for your exact boiler and try it once.
If L2 remains or returns, stop resetting the boiler and book a repair. Repeated lockouts mean the cause has not been corrected.
When is L2 urgent?
If you smell gas, do not reset the boiler or operate electrical switches. Open doors and windows if safe, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
If a carbon-monoxide alarm sounds or anyone has headache, dizziness, nausea or confusion, move into fresh air and seek urgent help.
What will an engineer check?
A Gas Safe registered engineer will confirm the model and follow Ideal’s procedure. Depending on the findings, checks may cover the gas supply, ignition and flame-sensing systems, condensate drainage, flue and boiler controls. These are not homeowner repair tasks.

Book a fixed-price boiler repair and have a qualified engineer work through the ignition lockout safely, with the aim of getting your boiler running again.
Quick answer
Ideal L2 means flame loss or ignition lockout. Check gas availability and an accessible external condensate pipe, then try one reset in accordance with your user guide. If L2 remains or returns, book a repair.
