Main E270 fault code explained
If a Main boiler displays E270, Baxi’s current technical reference defines the code as “Dry fire”. It is a protective fault relating to the conditions the boiler detects while trying to transfer heat into the system water.
Despite the wording, E270 does not mean the appliance is visibly on fire. It means the controls have detected a condition that should be checked before normal operation continues.
What does E270 dry fire mean?
A boiler is designed to pass heat into water and move that water through the heating circuit. “Dry fire” is the technical description used when the appliance detects that the expected water conditions are not present while heat is being produced or attempted.
The boiler stops because continuing under the wrong conditions could cause overheating or damage. E270 describes what the control system has detected; it does not identify the exact failed component. It would be misleading to say that every E270 needs a new pump, pressure sensor or heat exchanger.
Which Main boilers use E270?
Baxi Heating UK includes E270 in the error-code group containing Main Eco Compact Combi and Main Eco Compact System boilers. Main products have since been brought under Baxi branding, and Baxi says the established Main Eco Compact boilers continue with the same installation and performance under the Baxi MainEco name.
That brand change does not make the code applicable to every Main boiler. Confirm whether yours is an Eco Compact Combi, Eco Compact System or another range. Use the user guide that matches the full model and production generation.
How is E270 different from low pressure or poor circulation?
The same Baxi error table uses separate codes for related conditions:
- E118: water pressure low, below 0.5 bar.
- E125: water-circulation fault.
- E110: excessive boiler temperature rise or safety-thermostat operation.
- E270: dry fire.
These codes can point engineers towards overlapping areas of the heating system, but their meanings are not identical. Always quote the number actually shown on the display.
What symptoms can accompany Main E270?
The boiler may lock out, leaving no heating, no hot water or both. On a combi boiler, a fault can affect both services because they depend on the same appliance. On a system boiler, the effect on stored hot water depends on the wider installation and whether the cylinder can receive heat.
You may notice the fault after the system has been drained, radiators have been bled, valves have been changed or pressure has fallen. That timing can be useful, but it is not proof that the recent event caused the fault.
Safe checks before booking the repair
You can gather useful information without opening or altering the boiler:
- Confirm and photograph the E270 display.
- Read the full model name.
- Note the pressure shown when the system is cool.
- Check visible pipework and radiators for an obvious leak.
- Check whether external radiator valves or heating controls were recently changed.
- Record whether the system was drained, refilled or bled shortly before the fault.
The Main Eco Compact Combi has a front-facing pressure gauge and a filling arrangement, but only use the model’s own homeowner instructions. Do not repeatedly add water. If pressure falls again, the loss itself needs attention.
Can I reset a Main E270 fault?
Main Eco Compact boilers include a reset control. If the user guide permits a normal reset for the displayed fault, follow it once. If E270 returns, do not continue cycling the reset button.
A reset can restart the sequence; it cannot correct a persistent water, circulation, sensor or control problem. Repeated attempts may hide when the fault occurred and delay the repair.
Why pressure alone does not answer the question
A pressure gauge is helpful, but it shows only one aspect of the sealed heating system. A normal-looking pressure reading does not prove that water is moving correctly, and a low reading does not automatically convert E270 into E118.
Tell the engineer the reading rather than interpreting it as the cause. The combination of the code, model, system history and on-site checks provides the reliable answer.
What should remain off limits?
- The boiler’s screwed or sealed casing.
- The internal pump, air vents and hydraulic parts.
- Electrical connections, sensors and control boards.
- Combustion components and gas controls.
- Installer menus or service-test functions.
Gas Safe Register guidance says an integral gas-appliance casing can form an important part of the combustion circuit and should not be removed by a consumer.
What will the engineer assess?
The engineer will verify the Main model and E270 fault history, then assess the system water condition, circulation and the relevant protected boiler components. The checks must follow the service information for that precise product.
The repair could involve the wider heating system or a component inside the boiler. E270 narrows the investigation but does not support ordering a part before the boiler is checked.
Is Main E270 dangerous?
E270 is a protective dry-fire fault, not a message confirming a gas leak. Leave the appliance stopped if the fault remains and arrange a repair rather than trying to bypass it.
If you smell gas, suspect carbon monoxide, or a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 and follow its instructions.
Main E270 frequently asked questions
Does dry fire mean the boiler has no water at all?
Not necessarily. The display reports the condition detected by the boiler, but the code alone cannot establish the amount of water in the system or the exact reason the condition occurred.
Will topping up the pressure clear E270?
Only follow the exact user guide if pressure is genuinely below the stated range. Do not top up simply because E270 is present, and do not keep refilling a system that loses pressure.
Is E270 the same on Potterton Assure?
Baxi lists the same dry-fire definition in a group that includes both Main Eco Compact and Potterton Assure. Model-specific checks still differ, so use the correct guide and article for the appliance in front of you.
Do I need a new boiler?
E270 does not by itself justify replacement. The right choice depends on what has failed, the boiler’s age and condition, and whether a safe repair is economical.
