Main Eco Compact E270 fault code: dry-fire protection — Incredaboil guide

If your Main Eco Compact boiler shows E270, the manufacturer’s current error-code table defines it as “Dry fire.” This is a protective fault description. It means the boiler’s controls have detected conditions associated with unsafe heating without adequate water or heat transfer.

The code does not prove that the boiler actually fired with no water inside it. It also does not identify a failed pump, sensor, valve or any other component. Keep the casing closed and arrange professional assessment if the code appears.

What does Main Eco Compact E270 mean?

A boiler is designed to transfer heat into water moving through its heat exchanger and heating circuit. “Dry fire” describes a condition in which that safe transfer cannot be confirmed as expected. The appliance stops to protect itself rather than continuing to add heat.

The display is not a picture of what has happened internally. It reports the safety condition recognised by the controls. Several operating or sensing issues can produce a protective stop, and only proper testing can establish the cause.

Does E270 mean the boiler is empty?

No. The phrase does not prove there is no water in the boiler or heating system. The external pressure gauge may provide useful information, but its reading cannot by itself explain E270.

Do not start filling, bleeding or draining the system solely because this code has appeared. Those actions can change pressure and introduce a second problem if the cause lies elsewhere.

Which Main boilers can show E270?

Baxi’s current table places E270 in the group that includes Main Eco Compact Combi and Main Eco Compact System boilers. The effect at home can differ by model because a combi provides direct hot water while a system model heats a separate cylinder.

Quote the full model name when booking. Use information visible from outside the boiler and never remove the casing to locate a label.

What might you notice?

The boiler may lock out, stop firing or fail to meet a heating demand. On a combi, direct hot water may also stop. On a system model, previously heated water can remain in the cylinder temporarily even though reheating has stopped.

You may hear the boiler begin its sequence and then stop, but do not repeatedly request heat to reproduce the fault. Hot surfaces and water may still be present even though the appliance is not firing.

Safe observations to record

  • The exact E270 display and any symbol shown with it.
  • Whether the code appeared during heating or hot-water demand.
  • Whether the external pressure gauge looks different from its usual position.
  • Whether there is visible water around the boiler or radiators.
  • Whether the system has recently been filled, drained or worked on professionally.
  • Whether another fault code appeared first.
  • Whether the code clears once and then returns.

Observe from a safe position. Do not touch hot pipework or investigate inside the appliance.

Can you reset E270?

If the user guide for your exact Main Eco Compact model specifically instructs a reset, perform one normal user reset. Do not repeatedly reset a dry-fire protection fault.

A reset repeats the boiler’s checks. It cannot restore safe heat transfer if an underlying condition remains. A returning E270 code needs qualified repair.

What should you not try?

Do not remove the casing, touch the pump, operate internal valves, disconnect sensors or alter wiring. Do not bleed radiators, adjust a bypass, change pump settings or improvise a filling method because of the code alone.

Do not pour water into any part of the boiler or attempt to cool it. Internal components and water can remain hot. Boiler work must be carried out by a suitably qualified Gas Safe registered engineer.

What if the pressure gauge looks low?

Record the gauge position while the system is cold if this can be done without touching the appliance. If the exact user guide provides a normal homeowner top-up procedure and you are confident using the identified controls, follow only that guide. Stop if anything differs from it.

Do not repeatedly add water or assume low pressure caused E270. If pressure falls again, water is visible or the code remains, book a repair.

What if the code clears?

Keep a photograph and note how long the boiler then runs normally. A later successful cycle does not show why the protective state occurred. If E270 returns, arrange repair rather than repeatedly restarting the appliance or waiting for a complete loss of heating and hot water.

When should you book a repair?

Arrange professional help when E270 appears, especially if it returns after one instructed reset or the boiler cannot provide reliable heating or hot water. Treat visible water, repeated stopping or unusual noises as useful information for the engineer.

Give the exact model, code, gauge observation and the demand active when the fault appeared. Mention recent work without attempting internal checks.

Gas and carbon-monoxide safety

E270 is a dry-fire protection code and does not itself prove a gas leak or carbon-monoxide event. If you smell gas, suspect an escape or a carbon-monoxide alarm sounds, move everyone into fresh air and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 in Great Britain. Avoid electrical switches where gas may be present.

Possible carbon-monoxide symptoms include headache, dizziness, nausea, breathlessness, collapse or loss of consciousness. Seek urgent medical help if anyone may have been exposed.

Need the boiler repaired?

Quick answers

Did the boiler definitely run without water?

No. E270 is the manufacturer’s dry-fire fault description; it does not prove the appliance actually operated empty.

Does the pump definitely need replacing?

No. The code does not identify a failed pump or any other single component.

Should I bleed the radiators?

No. Do not release water solely because E270 is displayed. Record the external gauge and arrange advice.

Is E270 listed for Main Eco Compact boilers?

Yes. The manufacturer’s current table includes Main Eco Compact Combi and System models in the applicable group.
