If your Worcester Bosch boiler is showing 281, the code points to a circulation problem on the models covered by Worcester Bosch’s relevant technical literature. Depending on the exact model and control platform, the manufacturer describes it as the pump being stuck or running in air, or as the pump pressure increase being too low.
That does not mean every Worcester Bosch boiler uses 281 in exactly the same way. The model name matters, so check the label on the boiler and keep the user manual available when you book a repair.
What does Worcester Bosch code 281 mean?
In current Worcester Bosch documentation for affected appliances, 281 is a blocking code associated with the heating-water circulation pump. The boiler has not detected the circulation or pressure response it expected.
In plain English, water may not be moving through the boiler and heating system correctly. Possible causes can include air in the system, low system pressure, a circulation restriction, an electrical connection problem or a pump fault. Those are possibilities for the attending engineer to test; the code alone cannot prove which one is responsible.
Is code 281 the same on every Worcester boiler?
No. Worcester Bosch has produced many boiler ranges and control systems, and codes can be presented differently between them. Some manuals list 281 as a three-digit blocking code. Older appliances may show a letter and a cause code together, such as A1 with 281.
Use the exact model name and the complete display sequence when describing the problem. A photograph of the screen can be useful, especially if the display alternates between numbers or letters.
What you can check safely
You can make a few external checks without opening the boiler:
- Read the full display. Note every letter, number and symbol, not just 281.
- Check the pressure gauge or display. Compare it with the normal range stated in your boiler’s own user manual. Our guide to what boiler pressure should be explains the basics.
- Check ordinary controls. Make sure the programmer and thermostat are calling for heat and that radiator valves have not all been closed.
- Listen without removing the casing. Tell the engineer if you hear bubbling, repeated starting attempts or unusual pump noise.
- Try only the user reset described in the manual. Do not keep resetting a code that returns.
Do not remove the boiler casing, touch internal wiring, attempt to free the pump or bleed components inside the appliance. Those checks belong with a suitably qualified engineer.
Will topping up the pressure clear 281?
Low pressure is one possible reason a circulation system cannot behave normally, but topping up is not a universal fix for code 281. Only add water if the pressure is below the range stated by the manufacturer and you already know the correct external filling procedure for your appliance.
If the pressure is normal, rises quickly, repeatedly falls, or the code returns after a permitted reset, stop. Repeated topping-up can hide a leak or another fault and may make the eventual repair less straightforward.
Can you keep using the boiler?
A blocking code may prevent normal heating or hot-water operation until the boiler sees safe operating conditions again. Do not repeatedly force the appliance to run. If it clears but keeps returning, arrange a repair rather than treating the reset as a permanent solution.
If you smell gas, suspect carbon monoxide, see scorching or have a carbon-monoxide alarm sounding, do not continue normal troubleshooting. Turn off the appliance if it is safe to do so, ventilate the property, leave if necessary and follow the emergency guidance from the Gas Safe Register.
What will the engineer check?
The engineer will confirm the model and code history, check the system pressure and circulation, and then test the pump and related controls as required by the manufacturer’s instructions. The correct repair depends on what those checks find. Code 281 does not automatically mean the pump must be replaced.
It helps to share when the code first appeared, whether radiators were recently bled, whether the pressure has changed and whether any heating work was carried out shortly beforehand.

Quick answer
Worcester Bosch code 281 usually points to an expected circulation or pump response not being detected on the applicable models. Check the complete display, model and system pressure externally, use only the reset allowed by the user manual, and book a repair if the code remains or returns.
